Protecting the crown

  • When the bananas have been weighed, they are moved to the next person who applies a protective substance on the crown of the bunch.
  • The crown has to be protected so it won’t be attacked by fungi.
  • The protective substance is called Citrex. It’s an organic product based on citric acid. Some buyers also want the crown to be protected with plastic.
  • Then the stickers are put on the bananas. Different countries have different stickers. Some customers want a certain amount of stickers in a certain order. For Finland, two stickers are applied: the Oké-sticker and the Fairtrade sticker.
