-I’ve filled in all my papers, but right now the cooperative doesn’t accept any more members, says Bolivar Andrade.

He wants to be a member of Asoguabo to get a fixed price for his bananas all year, with a minimum level that Fair Trade guarantees.

-More than anything. But also to be able to sell my bananas directly. Not to depend on intermediaries for the export.

Asoguabo exports its own bananas.

-And you also get support easily from the cooperative, Bolivar says.

The reason why the cooperative isn’t accepting any new members is that they can’t sell any more fairtrade bananas.

-Now we’re producing 55 000 boxes a week. There’s no market for more, says general manager Lianne Zoeteweij.
