Cuenca is the most beautiful city in Ecuador, at least of the ones I’ve seen so far. It beats Quito any day. Here are three things you shouldn’t miss.
1. Walk the cobblestone streets downtown at least for an afternoon. The houses with their small balconies and gardens, the plazas behind every corner, churches big and small, and above all, the many bars, restaurants and cafés. Eat and drink as long as you’re here, because this food is as good as it gets in Ecuador.
2. Visit the ruins of the inca city Tomebamba, behind the Pumapungo museum. There’s not much left, but up on the hill you’ll feel like you’re on the top of the world. It’s surprisingly hard to climb the stairs in the thin air up here at an altitude of 2000 metres.
3. Take a nap on the grassy banks of the river Tomebamba, which runs through the town. Here you’ll be in the company of couples, families and people washing their clothes in the river.
