Today a banana producer can get 12 dollars a box for his fruit. Heavy rains in the competitor countries Costa Rica and Colombia have damaged banana crops, which has increased the demand for Ecuadorian bananas. But just for a few months, according to the experts the newspaper El Comercio has interviewed.
Approximately half of the Ecuadorian banana producers can sell their bananas at this price. The rest have yearly contracts with exporters, with a fixed price for the period. For example the producers of Asoguabo, who belong to Fair Trade, get 5,25 dollars a box.
